A lot can change in 48 hours.

For instance last Monday you might have had a smile on your face as a result of the International Day of Happiness. You might even have seen the How To Be Happy recipes in the media and started planning the steps to take to become more satisfied with your work, life or family.

Then on Wednesday came the terrorist attack in central London, which resulted in the death of police officer Keith Palmer and three others, plus over injuries to 50 other people. That is the kind of event which causes everyone to pause and wonder if there is a future in trying to make a positive change in the world.

Rising Above Set Backs

From the extreme of terror attacks to the everyday reality of negative people, life puts challenges in our way.  Our ability to respond to those challenges can sometimes use a boost.

Instead of being knocked off course by testing events some people naturally continue to plan; take action; contribute to a better world.

What sets those people apart?

In a word they embrace resilience (they recover quickly from difficulties).

3 Steps To Greater Resilience

If you want a greater ability to bounce back from set backs here are 3 steps to get you started

  • Connect with the other people who share your values. Find them on social media. What are they talking about? What can you contribute to their conversation?
  • Take the next step and participate in the the group’s real life sessions. Offering your time and insight strengthens the online connection. .
  • When you are ready step up to the next level of commitment and lead one of the group activities. Demonstrating your ability in this way will help you stand out and make your distinctive input be more memorable.

Is Improving Your Work Your 2014 Goal? Here Are Your 3 Key Actions To Take In The Next Week

Was your week a mix of Highs and Lows?  Was one low your boss telling you that your
performance ‘must improve’?  If the answer is ‘Yes’ here are 3 actions to help you move forward in the next week, towards your performance improvement goal:

  • Review the evidence of your previously Successful, or Excellent, reports.  This helps you top up your self-esteem.  Positive customer feedback has always reflected the quality of your work.  Cultivate it from this point

onwards.  Also plan how you will add to your key strengths, respect your values and earn more feedback.  Remember your boss’s view is probably changeable.  If not your psychological contract with your team may have ended.  Other bosses are out there.

  • Record the specifics of your next steps strategy, so you identify an immediate, positive, action you will take to start moving forward.  Call this Phase One of your plan.  Make it something constructive, that you know you can do well.  If that is not possible within your present role find another role that allows you to reassert your ability to do good work.  Outline what you want to accomplish in Phase Two of your plan, at the same time.
  • Recruit a skilled ally, ideally an experienced coach who: understands the significance of your work goals; recognises the importance of your values; will remain supportive as your performance rises and you start to fill in the detail of your Phase Two outline.

You are now good to go for Phase One of your plan.  Take these 3 constructive steps and your week ahead will be focused on improvement and positivity.

Goals 2014: 3 Questions To Help Your Personal Growth

Cup Of Tea

How Are You Planning To Develop This Spring?

Friday was Valentine’s Day, one of the few days in the year where your goal is simple to define: happiness.  How did it feel to take action to improve the quality of your personal relationship?

Congratulations on starting the ball rolling.  This weekend is the opportunity to take a 30 minute tea / coffee break and do some wider work on your goals.  When will you take further action to make your personal and professional life even better?

When you are doing this work – to help yourself develop in the direction you want to this spring – why not use the three questions below to kick start your thoughts.  Write down the answers and identify the action you are going to take.  Include the exact time in the coming week when you will take the action (and reward yourself when you do).

  • How will you seek more support from the people who will help you achieve your career and personal goals?
  • When will you influence your social network to provide you with more support?
  • As you take action on your own behalf what contribution will you make to the development of the people around you?

Good luck with your actions.  Feel free to feedback on your progress via the Contact page or on Twitter @RogerD_said (you can use On Facebook and Google+ too)
