3 Steps To Your #Goal Of Giving A Great Job Interview

An Interview Can Bring You Closer To Your Goal – Picture Credit Pexels Dot Com

It’s that time of year. The time when you start thinking about your next goal.

Maybe your heart is set on getting a new job, or starting a college course. Assuming your initial application has been successful and you have been chosen for interview the tricky part is ahead. 30 minutes marketing yourself to someone else.

So, your interview clothes are pressed.

Your shoes are clean.

You’ve practised smiling and shaking hands at the same time.

What’s your next step toward your goal?

How Do You Market Yourself?

Just recently I helped some interviewees practice their self-marketing skills. The candidates turned up looking like they wanted to impress (professionally dressed, heads up, smiling).

They were prepared, as they knew how the interview helped them toward their ultimate goal.

Each candidate brought a different set of skills and experiences to their interview too. They told their stories well. The ability to respond thoughtfully to three basic questions really let some interviewees shine

Preparing Your Answers

Here are the questions. What answers would you give? Feel free to Leave A Reply, Like and Share

First, What Attracted You To Apply For This Job / Course?

This open question allows you to start showing the interviewer why they should consider you an ideal fit for their opportunity.

You can use examples which show the strengths you have which make you perfectly suited to be a good performer if you join the organisation quite quickly and a great one in the longer term.

When you are presenting your examples use the STAR method to explain your Situation the Task you tackled, the Action you took and the great Results you produced. Extra credit if you describe the obstacles you overcame and the lessons you learned.

2. What Qualities Do You Bring To The Team?

More often than not you will be involved with other people in a business-as-usual or project team. How have you worked with others to solve problems? What skills do you bring to a team? If you have led a team, how have you motivated others? Use the STAR process to tell your story.

3. What Is The First Thing You Do When Your Plans Don’t Work Out?

Here’s your chance to shine. Everyone knows that plans don’t always work out. If you have a good example of how you handled a problem which came up out of the blue, use it. It is important to spotlight what you did in the situation though, even if others were involved. The interviewer will want to know about the difference you made to the end result.

Your Preparation, Evidence And Answers Matter

If you have thoughtful answers to these questions (and you tell your story well) you will stand out in the interviewers mind. If she or he has seen five or six candidates you want to be the first person they think about when they imagine selecting a new team member. Good preparation and presentation will help you stand out.

What Is Your Next Move?

So, good luck if you are a starting out, or moving on in your career. Use the comment section to say how you prepare for interviews where you are marketing yourself to strangers. You can be sure others will appreciate what you have to say.

Finally, thanks for reading. Feel free to Like and Share these ideas if you found them helpful.

How To Build #Resilience And Achieve #Success In Your #Goals

Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up For Resilience Image Via Pexels.Com

A lot can change in 48 hours.

For instance last Monday you might have had a smile on your face as a result of the International Day of Happiness. You might even have seen the How To Be Happy recipes in the media and started planning the steps to take to become more satisfied with your work, life or family.

Then on Wednesday came the terrorist attack in central London, which resulted in the death of police officer Keith Palmer and three others, plus over injuries to 50 other people. That is the kind of event which causes everyone to pause and wonder if there is a future in trying to make a positive change in the world.

Rising Above Set Backs

From the extreme of terror attacks to the everyday reality of negative people, life puts challenges in our way.  Our ability to respond to those challenges can sometimes use a boost.

Instead of being knocked off course by testing events some people naturally continue to plan; take action; contribute to a better world.

What sets those people apart?

In a word they embrace resilience (they recover quickly from difficulties).

3 Steps To Greater Resilience

If you want a greater ability to bounce back from set backs here are 3 steps to get you started

  • Connect with the other people who share your values. Find them on social media. What are they talking about? What can you contribute to their conversation?
  • Take the next step and participate in the the group’s real life sessions. Offering your time and insight strengthens the online connection. .
  • When you are ready step up to the next level of commitment and lead one of the group activities. Demonstrating your ability in this way will help you stand out and make your distinctive input be more memorable.

How Will You Build Up Your Resilience?

How Does Focusing On #Love Help You Tackle Your #Goals ?

A Heart Labelled Lovee

How Much Do You Love What You Do? Image From Pexels.Com

What would it feel like if you loved how you spent your day?

Imagine if you spent every waking moment using your natural skills to create exciting results. How happy would you and your clients be at the end of the week?

Also, think about the joy you would have if your non-work time was spent with people who were supportive, optimistic and focused on the goal of exchanging their experience with others to improve products and processes.

Like doesn’t have to be a grind.

But Life Is Hard Work!

For some people, especially those taking action to achieve their goals, life is enjoyable. They are not stuck accepting an situation they don’t love. They are thinking and acting differently and achieving different and better results.

Why?

Because they want to love what they do.

So I Can Just Decide To Love What I Do?

Yes. Maybe your occupation isn’t where you find satisfaction. Love might be linked to your family life, or volunteering. Having something uplifting makes life much more enjoyable.

These and similar themes are central to Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think And Grow Rich’, life and leadership guide which was published 80 years ago this year.

To paraphrase from Hill’s 1937 publication:

We have become what we are because of our dominating thoughts and desires.

So if we keep thinking of ourselves as stuck in a rut, isolated and powerless we reduce our chances of moving forward, connecting to a support system and loving our situation.

What’s Your Next Step?

So, I’m putting this post out to encourage people feeling stuck in a rut. Invest some time in writing down what your ideal situation will be in 12 month’s time. Commit to taking action each week to move toward your goal. Share your success story with one other person so they get motivated to change too.

Are you ready to pay attention to your needs? What initial step will you take toward your goal this month? How will that step help you start loving what you do? Leave a reply and have your say.

If you are in need of some support you can always download a free copy of my ABC guide via the Members Access page. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Comment on the post through social media so you start connecting to other goal-driven people too.

Finally, however you spend it, have a brilliant February.

How To Start Paying Attention To Your Priorities And #Goals

Tom Daley – Olympian Diver, Speaking Before His 2016 Bronze Medal Win

Lessons From Olympians

So the Olympics are here once again and I’ve been thinking about all the effort that lays behind being ready to achieve peak performance. Team GB have worked hard to be third in the medal tables. Watching a team member achieve a personal best, or an Olympic record in just a few seconds is only part of the story.

Here’s A Thought Experiment

Imagine yourself standing on the edge of the 10 metre Olympic diving board.

You tune out the hundreds of people in the aquatic centre. You don’t think about the millions watching at home. Your team mates and coach have helped you stand ready to perform at your best.

You breathe deeply. Then you spring off the board and tuck into your dive. Your thoughts are focused on your goal. You know you are going to achieve a perfect result. You perform twists and turns like nothing else matters, because nothing else does. You enter the deep water and you come back to the surface. You are buzzing with the feeling of achievement. You did your best.

How easy was it to focus on your outcome? Could you tune out all the background noise?

How To Start Paying Attention To Your Goal

I am not an Olympian, few people are, but I think we can all strive to achieve our main goal, if we are clear what aspect of our performance requires attention.

Sir Dave Brailsford (Principal of British cycling’s Team Sky) and coach has a theory about this. He believes that by concentrating on making a large number of small changes to improve performance, the net gain is significant. Each step is a marginal gain. Those steps correspond to the gradual process of becoming consciously competent at life.

I know background noise and life’s pressures can seem overwhelming. They can crowd out the internal messages which tell me it is time to change. However, once I have decided what I want to achieve (and when I want to achieve it) I can set a goal. That goal will help me move forward. The goal today was to write this post from scratch to share some information with you. I started with a blank page and here I am putting the finishing touches to it.

Getting started was hard. The next few steps were easier. Maybe the same is true for you?

How To Get Started

If you want to work out where you can focus your attention today is a good day to start. Why not start improving your wellbeing, strengthening your team working skills, or begin creating client-pleasing results now. There is plenty of support at hand (so you don’t have to feel isolated).

Your first step is easy. Head over to the Members’ area and download a free tool to help you start to reach your goal. 3 Steps Toward Better Diversity Results And #TVWeWant

There’s a good chance you haven’t thought about diversity lately.

Why would you need to pay attention to diversity after all?

Unless one of your goals is to meet the needs of a diverse group of customers (or you have a personal story which connects you to a disadvantaged group) you just get on with providing products and services on an equal basis.

However there is a risk associated with not showing  inspired leadership. That risk involves failing to meet the needs of different staff within organisations / industries and not paying attention to different customers / clients.

We each have a different life story. Leaders who build on the range of talent available make their team members feel engaged in producing outstanding results since their  unique contribution matters.

Diversity Problems In Hollywood Echo Those In UK Television

Follow the link in the Tweet if you want to check out my LinkedIn post on the Diversity Problem within the Hollywood film industry.

A similar discussion about the exclusive nature of an industry is taking place within UK public service broadcasting circles. What role will ethnically diverse staff and others at the margins play in that future? You can contribute to the discussion at www.futureoftv.org.uk

The Risk Of Staying The Same

If the people responsible for bringing new talent into organisations only hire people like themselves they aren’t helping solve the lack of diversity issue.

Staying the same within an organisation means it is likely the range of ideas, insight and engagement available to that organisation will remain limited. Customers won’t be served with the widest selection of offers possible.

More than that. If the sector stays the same don’t be surprised if in 5 years’ time award winners, Directors, Department Heads and senior staff still do not reflect the widest pool of talent.

A Better Way Forward

It seems to me there is a better way forward for media, or other business organisations.

I think that recruiting, retaining and supporting the progress of a diverse range of creatives (staff) can only widen the rich mix of broadcast output (products and services).

A greater mix of outputs makes it easier to achieve customer satisfaction.

3 Self Help Steps Toward Greater Diversity

So, assuming diversity matters to you here are 3 self-help steps which reflect my experience of supporting the development of women and men from diverse backgrounds since the 1990s:

  • Present yourself in a way which highlights your present experience and future potential (don’t get defined by other people’s view of you)

  • Record your achievements regularly using testimonials, feedback and a goal setting process (ensure those achievements count towards your next step)

  • Support others pursuing their professional development and seek support yourself where necessary (be determined to make the progress appropriate to your ambition)

5 Steps Towards Greater Success

Looking And Acting Like A Winner Picture From Morguefile.Com

Looking And Acting Like A Winner Picture From Morguefile.Com

Thank you if you have been following my posts this year. If you have checked in recently you probably know already I led a workshop in January focused on turning goals into reality.

The session reminded me that if you get enough freelancers and 9 to 5 workers together their stories come tumbling out. Their feedback created a snapshot of the world of work in 2016.

Avoiding Overwhelm

They said one of the tougher challenges they faced involved taking the right action and avoiding overwhelm. They were talking about having too few hours each day and too many to do items to handle.

They knew something had to be done. The question was, what to do to get that winning feeling back?

Was starting a new project the answer? Could growing a new professional relationship be a solution? How about keeping going with what already worked?

What Does Success Feel Like?

To help the discussion focus I mentioned Brian Tracy’s principle of starting with the end in mind. Vividly capturing (in words or pictures) what success feels like helps you work out how to achieve it.

Does success involve you creating client-pleasing software which puts a big smile on your customer’s face by offering more results, faster than expected?

Or is your success measured by the strength of the hug you get when you prioritise finishing work in time to pick your partner up from the station?

Greater Success Ahead

Whatever success means for you there is scope for it to include a greater sense of wellbeing; more positive teamwork; a growing group of satisfied customers.

5 Routes To Greater Success

  • Create Affirmations Using Words You Repeat to Inspire You
  • Construct A Vision Board Capturing Images Of The End Result You Want
  • Use A Favourite Piece Of Inspiring Theme Music To Get You Started On A Key Task
  • Enjoy The Smell Of Success By Using Your Favourite Aroma When Working
  • Treat Yourself To Your Favourite Healthy Beverage To Get Your Creativity Flowing

How To Start Turning Your Resolutions Into Reality

What Are You Going To Achieve Today?

What Are You Going To Achieve Today?

As January is nearly over I thought I would ask this question:

How are your New Year Resolutions holding up?

New Year New Start?

With 11 clear months ahead it is easy to promise to live healthier; improve skills; follow different career options; manage money better.

Just making that promise to yourself is very easy.

The reality is (once you have written your goal down) there is a lot of hard work to do something, every day, to move closer to you what you want to achieve.

Where Do You Start?

I think knowing ‘why’ you want to improve your life is essential. Clarity about your why means you can picture what part of your life to pay attention to first.

For example, do you want to feel confident that you are managing your money so your situation will be more secure in future? Then taking action now will start to shape your reality in years to come.

Why Self-Awareness Really Matters

I deliberately opened this post with that Steve Jobs quote. His wording is perfect. The evidence from a workshop I ran a couple of days ago is also spot on.

We each know best what we want from our lives. Our inner voice says it best. Listen to it. Then get your next steps to line up with your priorities.

So, here’s another question: which part of your life will you start improving today?

How To Take One Small Step Towards A Happier New Year

Astronaut Spacewalk Extra Vehicular Activity

What Giant Leap Will You Make By Acting On Your Goal? Image From Pexels.Com

For a while, when I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut.

With hindsight that idea said a lot about escapism (home life wasn’t always ideal to be honest). From what I can remember though I thought being a spaceman would be a pretty cool job. I mean how difficult could it be to live in a spaceship, with nothing holding you down, doing science stuff indoors and outside that helped people?

Turns out the science stuff and helping people isn’t that easy, as people have baggage and getting a good result has an impact on a lot of other people.

Teamwork

I definitely didn’t realise how much people rely on each other to make plans turn into reality. a long list of other people made it possible for the astronaut to do their thing.

For instance I didn’t know how crowded an astronaut’s life is: it took more than Tim Peake and the other 2 people in the Soyuz capsule to get the latest crew onto the International Space Station.

When the computers plotting the capsule’s approach to the ISS got the final stage wrong it was US astronaut Tim Kopra who passed manual docking control to Russian Commander Yuri Malenchenko, while ground controllers at Russia’s Mission Control Centre monitored developments and the ISS crew held their breath.

It took 3 attempts. Working together the team of astronauts got the job done (collaboration helps during spacewalks too). No lone heroics, just great teamwork. Overcoming difficulties usually depends on one person being open enough to say ‘I can’t do this on my own’ and to ask another person for help.

Mission Control We Have A Problem

So here is the thing, people can hold on to their difficulty for quite a while before looking for someone with whom to connect (ask any coach about building trusting relationships which offer others support ). Imagine holding on to a burden for months, years, or decades even. What kind of toll would that take?

Now imagine being able to flow freely, without that burdensome weight getting in the way. How much more could you accomplish for others? How much easier would your own life be?

The skilful coach understands others’ obvious and subtle needs (they might say they need clarity about their next step during an overwhelming period at work to start with. They might also be open to receiving support at a deeper level, so they can reduce the stress in their personal relationship)

Are you ready to get the support you deserve?

One Small Step

In a month, as part of my mission for the new year, I will support some people to take a small step toward a freer flowing 2016. My workshop in London on 23 January will help those ready to take one small step to turn their career, life, or wellbeing resolutions into reality*.

Use the Comment section to share your big goal for the new year (or get in touch via Twitter @RogerD_Said ). Also keep an eye out for updates, as I will share a few of the strategies I am going to use, ahead of time.

Meanwhile, wherever on Earth (or above it) you happen to spend the day have a very Happy Christmas.

4 Self Care Strategies Which Also Help Others Achieve Their #Goals

You Need To Feel Good To Use These Resources Well

You Need To Feel Good To Use These Resources Well

If you are a coach, a team leader, or a motivator you are used to helping others tackle their goals. With the start of 2016 close by where are you on the scale which starts in Excitement and ends in Overwhelming Anxiety?

We can’t all be upbeat 24/7. Sometimes our inner critical voice interrupts our excitement. We are developing into a new area and then BAM! up comes a story from the past where things didn’t go as planned.

Your Stories Have Value

I have supported enough people engaged in professional development as coaches etc to have heard a lot of stories about 2015’s challenges. Building up knowledge, likability and trust is hard work.

To be fair you also hear a lot of optimism about the new opportunities coming in 2016 and how learning lessons from the past can help shape the future.

Self Care Comes First

From what I have heard (and experienced) it makes sense to have a healthy balance between the positive energy you share with others and the wisdom you tap into from your own stories.

Speaking at London’s Business Show recently Britain’s number 1 motivational speaker Brad Burton made a brilliant point about the balance between useful stories and achieving results for others.

Reflecting on his own efforts to get the balance right over the years he said

Your story starts now. Pay attention to caring for yourself, your family and your business.

Your business goal might be achieving good results in your 9 to 5; enjoying success in your part time startup gig; or organising a knockout Christmas social for 100 people. Either way having a healthy balance helps produce good results for others and a feeling of satisfaction for you.

Inspired by Brad here are 4 self care strategies to reduce overwhelm, which you can start using today.

  1. Pay attention to the quality of your contributions – family, colleagues and customers appreciate your efforts. If you over do it trying to be active all the time with everyone in your life the quality of what you achieve goes down.
  2. Respect others’ boundaries and your own – if you have too much on your plate you can’t offer your best self to others. It is ok to set time when you won’t be available because those limits mean you can focus your time on your priorities.
  3. Care about your results within reason – while you recognise that some outcomes don’t call for 100% of your effort (because 80% will still produce good results).
  4. Decide how often you are going to review your needs – setting time to check in with yourself means you remain mindful of your own maintenance / development priorities. That helps you keep a fresh focus when you are supporting others’ development.
